After a few years down the line, I started noticing that designers are more focused on the beauty of the application. The beauty of the application is good to create the first impression on users. If the beautify of the application can hide real usability issues.

The other major issue is we are forgetting is that what we design has to be developed by the developers. The gap between the capabilities of the technologies available and the design has made the designs stand alone even though they look cool to look at.

As a product designer, I think that designers like to step away from the boundaries and the limitations of existing technologies. The innovation on products is focused on beauty but not on usability or intuitiveness. Having aesthetically usableness is good to cover up the minor usability problems in the design.

Understanding Aesthetic Usability Effect

The aesthetic-usability effect will mask the usability problems in the design. It also limits the design issues occur in the testing phase of the product. Humans have a strong sense of forgiveness for things when they are beautiful. In most of the designs, I see today in Dribbble is full of “WOW” effect creating aesthetically usability effect.

What can we do?

A good design is not just being beautiful. A good design should be meaningful, understandable and discoverable. The design should tell a story when looked at. The design should be realistic and it should address a particular problem in a given context. The design can be used and re-used in similar scenarios in a given context. The inspiration that we take from the design must be achievable in a technical context.

How can we do it?

  1. Create meaningful designs to a problem in a given context which is understandable and discoverable.
  2. Always use real-life scenarios in designs
  3. Look into technical complexities and have a background understanding weather, is this design can be developed or not.
  4. Look into design guidelines and try to adapt to them
  5. Don’t create new experiences. People spend more time on other applications. If you are willing to create new experience have it incrementally.
  6. Don’t limit your self to a topic and hashtags. Describe what you are trying to achieve. Tell what design principles you used. Lets others learn what you have learned.
  7. Look into UX principles, digital psychological principles, psychological principles in design to make your design beautiful.

And most importantly, Enjoy what you do…
