Write and call your representatives and ask for a meeting with them.
You are represented by one Senator and one House Member in the SC Legislature. To find out who your representatives are, go to www.scstatehouse.gov. At the bottom of the home page, fill in your address to “Find Your Legislators.” The last two names in your list of legislators are your SC Senator and your State Representative. Click on their name to bring up their contact information and an email link.
Tell your legislators you want them to join other legislators in the effort to repeal Common Core through legislation. Tell your Senator that you want them to co-sponsor S300 and tell your State Representative to co-sponsor H3943. Then ask for a meeting with them. We will not send you into a meeting with your legislators unarmed. A SCPIE leader can accompany you to your meeting and we will provide a notebook that details the problems with Common Core with fully-referenced facts. We can also help you draft your letter. Email the contact below for these needs.
Please also ask your Senator and House Rep to sponsor a forum like the one Senator Tom Corbin sponsored in Greenville recently so that citizens of your community can hear both sides of the issue. SCPIE can present the opposition and held organize the event.
Write and call Governor Haley’s Office.
Governor Haley says she is opposed to Common Core but is doing very little to help. She also committed our state to the Smarter Balanced Assessments Consortia (data mining component of Common Core). Below are four things to ask Governor Haley to do.
Meet with SCPIE regional leaders.
Rescind her decision to commit SC to the Common Core Smarter Balanced Assessments.
Ask her to appoint a knowledgeable opponent of Common Core to her vacancy on the Education Oversight Committee.
Ask her why repealing Common Core is not mentioned in her education plan.
Governor’s Contact Information: 803-734-2100, 1205 Pendleton Street, Columbia, SC 29201, or email via her website: http://www.sc.gov/pages/external.aspx?http://governor.sc.gov/.
